The chemical sector is one of the key sectors in the region – for skilled workers too.
Region Leipzig, particularly Böhlen, south of Leipzig, forms the south-eastern part of the long-standing yet modern "Chemiedreieck", the Middle German Chemical Triangle, which includes several hundred companies as well as numerous partners, such as universities and other research institutes. The Böhlen plant of Dow Olefinverbund GmbH is one of the largest and most important chemical plants in the Free State of Saxony within the key chemical sector.
The petrochemicals company works together with the chemical industry park in neighbouring Saxony-Anhalt and is part of a materials cluster established via a modern pipeline network. The raw materials are procured from the nearby Leuna refinery (Total). Ethylene, styrene, acrylate, aromatic compounds, hydrocarbon resins, butadiene and aniline are produced in Böhlen.
The Dow Chemical Company produces raw chemical materials and high-performance plastics at its location in Region Leipzig.
Efficient suppliers, processors and service providers have established themselves near the production site of the global Dow Group. The global group Air Liquide operates a production site for technical gases in Böhlen.
KuZ – Kunststoff-Zentrum in Leipzig gGmbH, a competence centre for the key chemical/plastics sector for injection moulding and polyurethane (PUR) processing, is located in the Leipzig science and research hub.
